IBPS PO Cutoff, Pattern and Analysis


About IBPS:

Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) is an autonomous agency in India, which started its operation in 1975 as Personnel Selection Services (PSS). IBPS is envisioned as self-governed academic and research oriented Institute, with a mission of enhancing human-resource development through personnel assessment. In 2011, IBPS announced a Common Written Examination (CWE) for the selection Officers and Clerks in Indian banks.

IBPS Recruitment for PSBs follows 2 or 3 tier scheme. IBPS undertakes the CWE for recruitment to the posts of Probationary Officers/ Management Trainees (PO), Clerks, Specialist Officers (SO), RRB’s Officers and Assistants.

IBPS PO 2016:

IBPS PO was made into a three tier exam- first the preliminary exam, then the mains exam and finally the interview- since 2015. The interviews are conducted by the participating organizations:

IBPS PO Preliminary:

IBPS Probationary Officer Preliminary is a computer based test.

There is negative marking of 0.25 marks.

Please note that the candidate needs to clear the sectional cutoffs for each section as well as overall cutoff.

The candidates who qualify the preliminary will then need to appear for the Main exam.


The Mains exam is also a computer based exam.

Eligibility Criteria for IBPS PO:

  • Nationality:

A candidate must be either-

  • a Citizen of India or
  • a subject of Nepal or
  • a subject of Bhutan or
  • a Tibetan Refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India or
  • a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India

Provided the foreign citizens need a certificate of eligibility in their favour issued by the Government of India.

  • Age:

The age limit for IBPS PO is – 20 years minimum and 30 years maximum. So for IBPS PO 2016 the candidate should be born between 2nd July 1986 and 1st July 1996 (both dates are inclusive).

Age Relaxation for Upper Age Limit:-

For SC/ST category                                                        5 years i.e. 35 years of age

For OBC category                                                           3 years i.e. 33 years of age

For Persons with Disabilities                                           10 years i.e. 40 years of age

For Ex-Servicemen                                                         5 years i.e. 35 years of age

J&K domiciled persons (from 1-1-80 to 31-12-89)          5 years i.e. 35 years of age

Persons affected by 1984 riots                                        5 years i.e. 35 years of age

  • Educational Qualification:

A graduation degree in any discipline from a University recognized by the Govt. Of India or any equivalent qualification recognized as such by the Central Government.

How to Apply:

Candidates can apply online only. No other mode of application will be accepted.

Pre-Requisites for Applying Online Before applying online, candidates should—

  • Scan their photograph and signature ensuring that both the photograph (4.5cm × 3.5cm) and signature.
  • Keep the necessary details/documents ready to make Online Payment of the requisite application fee/ intimation charges
  • Have a valid personal email ID, which should be kept active till the completion of this round of Common Recruitment Process. IBPS may send call letters for the Examination etc. through the registered e-mail ID. In case a candidate does not have a valid personal e-mail ID, he/she should create his/her new e-mail ID before applying on-line and must maintain that email account.

Guidelines for Scanning and Upload of Photograph & Signature:

Before applying online a candidate will be required to have a scanned (digital) image of his/her photograph and signature as per the specifications given below. The image file should be JPG or JPEG format.

Photograph Image:

  • Photograph must be a recent passport style colour picture.
  • Make sure that the picture is in colour, taken against a light-coloured, preferably white, backgroun
  • Dimensions 200 x 230 pixels (preferred).
  • Size of file should be between 20kb–50 kb.

Signature Image:

  • The applicant has to sign on white paper with Black Ink pen.
  • The signature will be used to put on the Call Letter and wherever necessary.
  • Dimensions 140 x 60 pixels (preferred).
  • Size of file should be between 10kb – 20kb.
  • Signature in CAPITAL LETTERS shall NOT be accepted.

Procedure for Uploading the Photograph and Signature:

  • There will be two separate links for uploading Photograph and Signature.
  • Click on the respective link “Upload Photograph / Signature”.
  • Browse and Select the location where the Scanned Photograph / Signature file has been saved.
  • Select the file by clicking on it.
  • Click the ‘Open/Upload’ button.

IBPS PO Cut Offs:

Each candidate will be required to obtain a minimum score in each section and also a minimum total score to be shortlisted for interview.  The cutoffs are decided on the number of vacancies and the number of applicants. For a better understanding, let us have a look at the cutoffs for 2015 and 2014.

Cutoff Analysis and Tips:

Looking at the trend, one can say that the cutoffs for logical reasoning are usually higher than those of English and Maths. So you got make sure you attempt more questions from this section.

Also important to note is that the overall cut off is always more than the total of sectional cutoffs. So decide on a minimum number of questions you would attempt from each section and then focus on your stronger sections to score more and clear the overall cut off. This planning needs to be done beforehand because IBPS PO exam is a time crunching one.  So make sure you plan your exam strategy.
